This is a view of one of the city gates in the Belgia city of Diest.

The city is located at a strategic location on the Demer river. Because of this, the city has been besieged and destroyed many times in its history and after each attack the city walls were rebuilt according to the latest technology. The last time this happened was after the war of independance against the netherlands. A long stretch of a 10 meter high double wall still stands and this gate is part of it.

A traveler would pass the outer gate and enter this structure which protrudes from the outer wall and acts as a barbican for the gate complex and a bastion (you can see a number of casemates to the side). A tunnel would lead the traveler under the outer wall and to a bridge over the Demer river (which acted as a moat). On the other side of the river there was another similar complex defending the inner moat.

another view of the complex can be found here [link]

i don't know, it kind of adds a little extra to the allready delapitated look of the place. i wonder where it is going though. there is nothing outside the gate except a railway line. on the other side there is nothing for it to go to. just the tunnel under the outer wall and some more casemates and guardrooms, but nothing electrical there.

yes, unfortunately the old casemates and underground rooms are also a place where a lot of people evade the high price of waste disposal :(

You wouldn't be against me editing the photograph to take out the rubber line, would you? Just for personal sake, I want to see if I can do it - but only with your permission. :D

In hindsight, I could do it without ever consulting you, but where's the decency in that!?

It's still a very good shot, regardless of the line. I can't take my eyes away from the crown of the archway. The bricks are so broken down and worn out. :D
