This is the Court of Busleyden in the Belgian city of Mechelen. The palace that was originally built for Jeroen van Busleyden; a well known mecenas and humanist who lived in the city around the end of the middle ages. This palace was constructed in the early 16th century by the then well-known architect Rombout Keldermans II, who was involved in the design and/or construction of many late-gothic churches, market halls and town halls in the low countries.

Note the gothic ballustrade on the first floor and the huge stair tower. The latter is a common feature in such urban palaces -meant as a belvedere but mostly to impress people- but this one is certainly the larges i've seen.

well the person for whom it was built was a well known humanist, founded one of the most well known colleges of the old university of Leuven and was close friends with Erasmus. This house may not have been a university, but it was certainly a centre of knowledge and learning.

Beautiful design. The texture contrast between the roof and the red bricks of the town house stands out so well...
